Visit potential towns

Research schools and childcare

Compare commute options

1-3 Months Before Your Move
Action and closing phase
Secure your housing
Finalize your purchase or rental in Northern NJ. If you are buying, work with Scott to navigate the closing process, inspections, and financing.
Schedule movers
Book your moving company at least 4-6 weeks in advance, especially during peak moving season (May-September). Get quotes from at least 3 moving companies.
Set up utilities
Contact PSE&G (electric/gas), local water provider, and internet/cable providers to set up service at your new home starting on your move-in date.
Submit change of address with USPS
File your change of address online at USPS.com at least 2 weeks before your move. This ensures your mail follows you to your new Northern NJ home.
Update your address
Notify your bank, credit card companies, insurance providers, employer, and all subscription services of your new address.
Start packing and decluttering
The earlier you start, the less stressful moving day will be. Donate, sell, or discard anything you do not want to move. Start with items you use least.
Week of Your Move
Final preparations
Confirm moving details
Confirm the date, time, and address with your moving company. Make sure they have clear instructions for parking and building access.
Pack an essentials bag
Pack a bag with clothes, toiletries, medications, chargers, important documents, and anything you will need for the first few days in your new home.
Clean your current home
If you are selling, do a thorough clean. If renting, follow your lease's move-out cleaning requirements.
Final walkthrough
Do a final walkthrough of your current home to make sure nothing is left behind. Check closets, attic, basement, and garage.
Transfer utilities out
Schedule the end date for utilities at your current home to align with your move-out date.
After Your Move
Settling into Northern NJ
Register your vehicle in New Jersey
If moving from out of state, you have 60 days to register your vehicle in New Jersey. Visit your local NJ MVC office with your out-of-state title, registration, insurance, and proof of address.
Get a New Jersey driver's license
You have 60 days from establishing residency to get a NJ driver's license. Visit a NJ MVC agency with the required documents (proof of identity, Social Security, address).
Register to vote in New Jersey
Register to vote in your new county. Visit the New Jersey Division of Elections website or your County Commissioner of Registration to register.
Find local healthcare providers
Find a new primary care doctor, dentist, and other healthcare providers in your area. Check with your insurance for in-network providers in Bergen or Hudson County.
Register for school
Contact your local school district to register students. You will need proof of residency, birth certificates, immunization records, and previous school records.
Explore your new community
Get to know your new town. Visit local parks, restaurants, farmers markets, and community events. Check our blog for local recommendations and seasonal activities.
Connect with your community
Join local community groups, neighborhood associations, and social clubs. This is the best way to build your network in Northern NJ.
