My Leonia Story: 32 Years of Roots, Results, and Community

I want to share something personal with you. Not a market report, not a town guide, not a listing update. A story. My story. And it starts in a place I have called home for more than 32 years: Leonia, New Jersey.

Growing Up in Leonia

I moved to Leonia when I was three years old. Three. That means I have no memory of living anywhere else. This town is the place where I learned to ride a bike, where I made my first real friends, where I walked to school, and where I figured out what community actually means.

Leonia in those years was everything a small-town childhood should be. The streets were safe enough that kids played outside until the streetlights came on. Neighbors knew each other by name. You could walk to Wood Park for a game of pickup baseball, ride your bike to the library on Saturday morning, or grab a slice at Broad Avenue Pizzeria after school.

The schools were where I spent most of my formative years. Anna C. Scott Elementary, Leonia Middle School, and Leonia High School were more than buildings to me. They were where I learned not just math and English, but how to be part of something bigger than myself. The teachers knew your name. They knew your family. They cared about your future.

What I did not understand at the time was that I was absorbing something that would become central to my career decades later. I was learning what makes a community work. Not from a textbook. From lived experience.

Leonia: The Town That Shaped Me

Leonia today is everything it was when I was a kid, only better. It is a diverse, established community of about 9,300 people, tucked between Fort Lee and Englewood in southeastern Bergen County. It has the same tree-lined streets, the same historic Victorians and colonials, the same walkable downtown on Broad Avenue. But it has also grown into something even richer.

What makes Leonia special among Bergen County towns? For one, the location. We are about 10 minutes from the George Washington Bridge, which means Midtown Manhattan is 25 to 35 minutes away when traffic is light. NJ Transit bus 166 runs from Broad Avenue to the Port Authority. The Edgewater ferry terminal is a five-minute drive for anyone who wants the fastest commute on the Hudson.

The schools are above average with a 13:1 student-teacher ratio. Anna C. Scott, Leonia Middle School, and Leonia High School serve about 2,000 students across Leonia and Edgewater. The district consistently performs well on standardized testing, and the high school offers Advanced Placement courses, strong athletics, and a genuine commitment to inclusion.

And then there is the community itself. Overpeck County Park is right at our doorstep with 800 acres of walking trails, sports fields, a lake with kayak launches, and a county dog run. The Leonia Players Guild has been producing community theater since 1919. Leonia Day in May brings the whole town together for a parade, food vendors, and live music.

Every street, every neighborhood, every block in this town means something to me. And that is not something you can learn from a listing sheet.

Leaving and Coming Back

After high school, like a lot of kids who grow up in a small town, I left. Life took me elsewhere for a while. College, career, the usual path. I lived in other places, met new people, built a life outside the Bergen County bubble.

But Leonia never really left me. When I thought about where I wanted to raise a family, there was never really a question. In 2012, I made the decision to come back. And this time, I was not just coming home for myself. I was coming home to raise my children in the same town that raised me.

Driving back into Leonia after years away felt like stepping into a memory that was still warm. The same streets. The same parks. The same corner stores and familiar landmarks. Some things had changed, sure. New restaurants had opened on Broad Avenue. The town had grown more diverse and more vibrant. But the heart of it was exactly where I left it.

I remember thinking: this is the place I want my kids to know. This is the community I want them to grow up in. This is home.

Raising the Next Generation in Leonia

Watching my children experience Leonia the way I did has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. The same schools. The same parks. The same sense of safety and belonging that I took for granted as a kid. They walked the same hallways at Anna C. Scott that I walked. They played on the same fields at Wood Park. They grew up knowing their neighbors and being known by them.

The Leonia school system gave my kids exactly what it gave me: a solid education, teachers who cared, and a community of friends from all kinds of backgrounds. The diversity of Leonia is one of its greatest strengths. My children learned alongside kids from every culture and every walk of life, and that has shaped who they are as people.

Being a parent in this community gave me something else, too. It gave me insight that no amount of market research can replace. I know what it is like to walk your kid to the bus stop on the first day of school. I know which streets are best for Halloween. I know which blocks have the kind of neighborly feel that makes a family fall in love with a house before they even step inside.
